Sidewalk Trash: Accountability
By Upcast | Published 09 May 2007 | spiritual

Sidewalk Trash: AccountabilityTaking a walk the other day I came across a ton of trash out on the sidewalk.
To my surprise it was garbage day.

Well what if no one made the effort to pick it up and it continued to pile up for years?
Needless to say I wouldn’t be able to walk on that sidewalk anymore. I’d probably distance myself from the outdoors and become a cheese wiz lovin’ couch potato.

Ok let’s parallel this illustration.
Sometimes that’s what our lives feel like, we do so many stupid things that just pile up and we may put it out there on our sidewalk for the whole world to see but then what happens? Well without the right clean up crew on your side, it slowly seeps back into our lives as it builds up.

Having good Christian friends & mentors (pastors, parents, ect…) that keep you in check are a necessity to a healthy relationship with God. They keep you accountable and help you through times that may seem too hard to handle.

In today’s culture everywhere you turn is someone or something trying to tear down your morals and faith.
Seriously, listen to the lyrics of a few songs that you hear during your day tomorrow as well as the conversations that come up around you.
I don’t think that you’ll be surprised or even slightly shocked but it’s the truth.
We live in a crazy world and we need people to help us along the way.

James 5:16 (CEV)
”If you have sinned, you should tell each other what you have done. Then you can pray for one another and be healed. The prayer of an innocent person is powerful, and it can help a lot.”

Here are a few tips to help you get started.
Usually it’s best to have more than one person to look up to.

Does Gender matter when it comes to an Accountability Buddy?
Yes and No. For a 1 on 1 situation it’s best for guys to stick with guys and gals with gals.
This is due to the fact that people generally get emotionally attached to others when discussing intimate issues in their lives. I’ll discuss this in a later article.
It’s good to surround yourself with good strong God minded friends no matter the gender.

I can’t believe you would say that, I thought you were my friend!
Well it’s a fact; occasionally they will say something that rubs you the wrong way.
You’ll just have to keep in your mind why they are saying what they are saying. Kapeesh?
The only way for someone to be a true Accountability Buddy is to blast you with the raw truth when you most likely don’t want to hear it.

I’m not telling anyone this one! I mean, what would they think of me?
The whole point of having an accountability buddy is to help you through such serious things that you wouldn’t tell anyone else. But there is a dark side to this, some people just cant help having big mouths, lose cannons, diarrhea of the tongue ect…
So on that note it’s best to make sure that you can trust this person with the very important intimate issues in your life.

Here are some qualities to look for in an Accountability Buddy.
1. Close Relationship (you are with them more than once in a blue moon)
2. Very Trustworthy (someone that has no problem keeping your talks confidential)
3. Strong Spiritual Walk (they are passionate about taking their own relationship with God even deeper)
4. Honesty (They are comfortable sharing their struggles with you)

If you’re ready to get rid of all the trash in your life, every helping hand makes it that much easier!
So build up your friends as they build you up. Pray for them as they pray for you.

In Closing just remember to seek God before and through seeking your accountability buddies advice.
No matter if you have a shoulder to cry on when you need one or not, God is always there to help you with all of your burdens and He will never ever let you down even know we sometimes let ourselves down. We’re Human and God is God.
